Old Mill Rd. bridge work commences this week

KAGAWONG鈥擮ld Mill Road Bridge contractors, MCA Contractors Ltd., will be commencing active construction on the Old Mill Road Bridge replacement project on May 1 in Kagawong. This work will include removal of the old bridge, excavation of existing approaches/abutments, installation of a new pile system and approaches, installation of a new bridge deck and guardrail along with roadway re-instatement.

鈥淭here will definitely be a period of some weeks when the bridge will be completely out-of-service. Access to residences on Old Mill Road, northeast of the bridge, will be via Newburn Road, Graham Hill Road and Graham Hill only,鈥 a press release explains. 鈥淭his will apply to all resident access, service deliveries, etc., as well as emergency services (police, fire and ambulance). Commencement of the period of full closure will be refined once the contractor is mobilized to the site, but as of the time of writing this (April 15), we are anticipating full bridge closure (no access) to be occurring no later than May 15.鈥

It was further explained, 鈥渢hat construction will affect pedestrian traffic, including Kagawong River Trail users. There will be no access for pedestrians to cross the river at the Old Mill Road bridge site. Trail users who use the pedestrian bridge to cross from the west side trails to the east side trails, and proceed to the river mouth, will have to retrace their steps.鈥

The project is scheduled for substantial completion by September 30, 鈥渂ut we will be working with the contractor and project engineers, EXP Services, to complete the work as quickly as possible,鈥 the press release adds.
